How Do You Take Care of Your Mouth After Extraction?

Undergoing a tooth extraction can be a daunting experience, but the post-operative care is crucial to ensure proper healing and to avoid complications. At Concierge Dental, we prioritize your health and recovery, so we’ve compiled this comprehensive guide to help you take care of your mouth after an extraction.

Immediate Post-Extraction Care

1. Control Bleeding

After the extraction, it’s normal to experience some bleeding. Bite down gently but firmly on the gauze pad placed by your dentist. Keep it in place for about 30 to 45 minutes. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with a fresh one and bite down again. Ensure you avoid spitting, as this can dislodge the clot and prolong bleeding.

2. Manage Pain and Swelling

To alleviate pain, your dentist may prescribe painkillers or recommend over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen. Applying an ice pack to the affected area can help reduce swelling. Use the ice pack intermittently for 15-minute intervals during the first 24 hours.

3. Take it Easy

Rest is crucial for recovery. Avoid strenuous activities for at least 24 hours to prevent increased blood pressure and bleeding at the extraction site. Keep your head elevated when lying down to minimize bleeding.

Day-by-Day Post-Extraction Care

Day 1-2: Protect the Blood Clot

The blood clot that forms in the extraction site is vital for healing. Avoid actions that could dislodge it, such as drinking through a straw, smoking, and vigorous rinsing. Stick to soft foods and avoid hot liquids.

Day 3-7: Maintain Oral Hygiene

While it’s important to maintain oral hygiene, you must be gentle around the extraction site. Here’s how:

  • Rinse Gently: Start rinsing your mouth with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) to keep the area clean. Do this several times a day, especially after meals.
  • Brush Carefully: Continue brushing your teeth, but be careful around the extraction site. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid the area directly.

Week 2 Onwards: Continue Gentle Care

By now, the initial healing should be well underway, but continue to:

  • Avoid Hard or Chewy Foods: Stick to soft foods to avoid putting pressure on the healing site.
  • Monitor the Area: Watch for signs of infection such as excessive swelling, pus, fever, or persistent pain, and contact your dentist if any of these symptoms occur.

Long-Term Recovery Tips

1. Follow-Up Visits

Attend all follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing. Your dentist will check the extraction site and address any concerns you may have.

2. Avoid Smoking

Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of complications like dry socket. If you smoke, consider quitting or at least avoid smoking for several days post-extraction.

3. Eat Nutritious Foods

A balanced diet aids in recovery. Focus on nutrient-rich foods like yogurt, smoothies, soups, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Gradually reintroduce solid foods as you heal.
