When Do I Need X-rays?

Imagine a dazzling smile in the mirror.

That’s not just a dream; it can be reality with a little help from your trusted dental team at Concierge Dental Group.

One vital tool in maintaining that gorgeous smile is the dental x-ray. Let’s explore the scenarios in which you might need one.

The different types of dental x-rays and when you need them

There are about half a dozen kinds of dental x-rays. Which we use depends on the situation.

Here’s a look at four types of x-rays:

  • Bitewing. If you’re getting a bitewing x-ray, you’re getting one of the more common kinds. A patient getting a bitewing must bite down on a flat, stiff tab—sometimes called a wing. The wing usually is turned horizontal in the mouth, but it can be vertical. Bitewing x-rays capture close-up views of the upper and lower teeth in one area of the mouth. They’re good for spotting cavities between teeth.
  • Panoramic. This is a superstar in the dental world because it can take a picture of all your teeth at once. It’s like a group photo showing how all your teeth are coming in and how much space there is for them.
  • Occlusal. A patient getting this kind of x-ray has film placed against the upper or lower front teeth to show their arch and check for structural issues with the roof or floor of the mouth. Occlusal x-rays often are used in children to evaluate dental development or pathology.
  • The periapical. This x-ray primarily is used to find abnormalities of the bone and root area of teeth. It shows a whole tooth or teeth: the crown, the root, and tooth’s connection to the jaw.

A real-life smile saver

Let me share with you the story of Kristen (not her real name), who came into Concierge Dental Group not too long ago. Kristen was young and loved candy but hadn’t experienced the downside of her sweet tooth. A panoramic x-ray showed cavities were forming.

Fortunately, we caught them early and were able to send Kristen home with a big smile on her face, knowing her teeth would be just fine.

This is the kind of proactive care dental x-rays allow, keeping little problems from turning into big ones.

Keeping the smile alive

So, when do you need a dental x-ray?

It depends on your health history and the condition of your mouth.

Children tend to need x-rays more often because their teeth and jaws are growing. Adults often need them to check for hidden problems or to monitor existing issues.

Your friendly team at Concierge Dental Group is here to guide you and make sure you only get x-rays only when you truly need them. With our help, you can maintain that bright, healthy smile for years to come.
